    Table Scraps

We feed our dog a slice of bologna or a hot dog on occasion but she doesn't beg while we eat or anything like that. I do put her up when we have guests that are afraid of dogs or just don't like them. I'm pretty accommodating to guests who are just there for a few hours.

    Hip replacement

I honestly hope that Sadie never needs one. It's one of the main reasons I'm working so hard on her weight. I'm not sure I'd ever have one done on a dog simply because of the mobility limitations and the pain. There's a lot to consider.

I'd love to be a dog groomer in my next life!

I'm exhausted just watching our groomer while she's finishing up Sadie. I bet it takes a great deal of patience to do the job. I can't imagine trying to paint their tiny toenails or brush out old tangles, Savile.

    Owners interfering with handling

They always make it worse too because it increase the dog's panicked emotions. I've never understood why owners don't just let the professionals handle it.

I'd love to be a dog groomer in my next life!

It's sweet of you to help pups like that. It can't feel good to have matted up fur. I'm not a dog groomer but I sure appreciate the one that takes care of Sadie. She also volunteers to groom the dogs at the Humane Society when they need help. It turns out those thick tangles of fur can lead...

Did you know that we sometimes do things dogs don’t like ?

So very true. I try to upset Sadie at a minimum. She hates the vacuum cleaner, so it only comes out when she's playing outside.

    Pet peeves

I believe this section of the forum is mainly for professional vet techs and groomers. Sadie sees both. Our vet is fantastic, but the vet tech honestly does most of the work. Sadie goes to the groomers twice a month usually. I wanted their take on how to make the appointments go smoothly...

Did you know that we sometimes do things dogs don’t like ?

Sadie gives me the most pitiful look in the world when I have done something to offend her. Thanks for sharing your article. I'm printing this out for the fridge. Oh, Sadie says you forgot to add baths to the list and that it should go in the top spot.

What are some of your pet peeves? As a dog owner and potential customer, what can I do so the appointment goes smoothly for us all.

    Essential Oils and Dogs

Some of my friends recommend using various essential oils on dogs and a few vets even sell them in their practice as complimentary medicine and training aids. Are there some essential oils that are beneficial to dogs or is it pseudoscience?

Keeping my dog entertained while I'm at work?

I can't thank you all enough for the great advice! I'm still looking for a petsitter, but in the meantime, I decided to take the advice here about enriching Sadie's environment. The Kong has been a big hit and it keeps Sadie occupied for a long time! I also got her a wooden puzzle box that...

What makes a good pet sitter/dog walker?

I walk Sadie myself and enjoy it, so I'm not at all interested in a dog walker. Sadie has a doggy door that goes into our large fenced in yard. I wouldn't want someone to take her off the premises at all! Sadie doesn't run for the door in order to escape nor is she digger who tries to crawl...

Giving dogs a bath with warm water... please do.

I don't see how cold water gets all the soap out, but I wonder if those owners think it's a good way to cool their dog off while also getting it clean. My dog has her own little swimming pool for splashing around, but she never heads for it until the water is warm. No animal likes to be cold.

    Fleas

I'm applying the same stuff. I just worry about getting it just right. My pup is fluffier than she looks and she's a little overweight. Even though Sadie is perfectly cooperative, I have to wade through her hair to hit skin and hope I'm actually still in the right spot. The extra weight kind...

What makes a good pet sitter/dog walker?

I'm looking for a petsitter to play with my large dog on the days that I work late. Do you have any tips for finding the right person for the job?

    Fleas

I've used Revolution for years and it's always done the trick. It's supposed to keep heartworms, ear mites, and other parasites at bay as well. Do you find it hard to apply though?

    Training treats?

Kirsten, do you leave food out all day for your dog, or do you only provide food during meal times? I leave dry food out, but only give her wet food during meal times. I like your idea about switching the treats up. I'll run by Petsmart tonight after work and grab something different.

Keeping my dog entertained while I'm at work?

There's some awesome advice here! I don't have a doggy daycare near me, but I can use the rest of the tips. I'm going to slowly incorporate each one so as not to overwhelm Sadie and let you all know how it goes.

    Training treats?

My dog is most motivated by food. Which brand and style of treats do you recommend for training dogs that are a little too heavy already?

Keeping my dog entertained while I'm at work?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply Kirsten! Sadie does pretty good for about six hours, but sometimes I have to work longer at the office for about eight to nine hours at a time. I work from home a lot, so it doesn't happen often. I have a doggie door and a fenced in yard, so Sadie can go...
