Dogs Accidentally Ate Chocolates

What do we need to do when our dogs accidentally ate chocolates? I have heard that dogs digesting large amounts of chocolates can kill them. I haven't experienced this before, but I guess it is good to know what to do if ever this happens to our dogs.

I think most people will probably say to take them straight to the vet. For me, it depends on the dog's size, the type of chocolate that was consumed, how much chocolate was eaten, and how the dog is acting. If the dog is acting sick or unusual, I'll always head to the vet. If the dog ate a lot of dark chocolate or the kind of chocolate you bake with, I'll head to the vet. But if the dog is acting normally and it was whipped chocolate, white chocolate, or a chocolate bar that's filled with peanut butter, then I'm going to take the watch and wait approach. Of course, I'll head to the vet if anything changes.

I will also bring my pet to the vet when I know that it consumed lots of chocolates. I know that kids sometimes feed dogs with whatever snacks they have in hand, including chocolates. It will be good to tell kids not to feed any dogs with chocolate because it will harm the dog.

If your dog eats a lot of chocolate, take him straight to the vet or your closest emergency vet.

If your dog only ate a little chocolate, I'd call the ASPCA Poison Control line. They do charge a fee for the consult, but it is worth it to know what the best course of action is in that situation.

I've read that white chocolate is the least toxic to dogs while dark chocolate is the most toxic. Try to keep all chocolate out of your dog's reach, though.

Hopefully you'll never have to deal with this situation.
