Grass Eating

I know that dogs eat grass when they have stomach problems. However, I wonder if they know what kind of grass is good for them to expel the unwanted food inside their stomach. How can we help them whenever they start eating grass?

Great question and I would most likely assume most dogs will not discriminate between safe and unsafe grass. In my experience some dogs will eat just about anything. As we know all dogs are individuals and I would also be interested if someone did a study on this.

Here is an article with some more info on dogs eating grass.

I say prevention is better than cure. Dogs usually have stomach problems when they have eaten something that is not on their regular diet. I'm not a veterinarian but this is what I observed with our pets. We must make sure that they eat only the food that we provide them although we cannot watch them all the time. I guess it boils down to how we train them since they were puppies.

That's a good question.

I also think it's best to try to prevent stomach issues, though we can't prevent them all, obviously. Sometimes a dog's tummy will be upset because he ate something, "bad," but other times, his tummy will be upset because he has a virus or another type of illness. We usually cannot prevent our dogs from becoming ill.

However, we can dog-proof our homes and keep an eye on our dogs when we are home. Dogs are like toddlers - they tend to get into everything. We have to keep our homes safe for them and train them to not eat inappropriate things.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I saw some stray dogs eating their own vomit, sorry for the graphic description. Is it also a possibility that our own pets will do the same behavior? If so then I guess that is one way that our beloved pets will have stomach problems.

Dogs do silly things that we can't understand why they do it. They put their mouths in places we don't even want to touch with our fingers. These things and others can make our dogs sick. This is the reason we need to bring them to the vet in a monthly checkup to see whether they are doing fine or not.
