I hate crate training!

When I got my adult dogs, crate training wasn't a thing. Now that I have a puppy, both the vet tech and the groomers insist that crate training is the only way to go. It's not something I'm comfortable doing. Is crate training really the best method for housebreaking a puppy?

I wouldn’t say it is the only way to potty train a puppy or dog. It definitely can help in the right circumstances or dog. I feel a crate becomes a safe place for a dog if desensitized correctly.

Crate training definitely has lots of pros IMHO. It becomes a safe place for the dog to escape if need be and we can keep them safe. Many dogs are not crate trained and do panic if they ever need to be in one like a vet or groomer visit.

Can we potty train without it yes of course. I never did like crates myself but now Recommend every dog to learn to love the crate. I always have a crate open for my dog if he ever needs a safe place :)

Hope this helps...

Are you supposed to crate the puppy every time it's unsupervised? In other words, is it locked in when you take a shower, go shopping, go to work, and sleep for the night? I can't imagine that would be healthy. I'd be afraid crate training would make the pup leery of coming when called, but I'm not familiar with the practice. I'll check the blog here to see if there's an article about it.
.
I would be upset with any professional who pushed an opinion on me that made me uncomfortable and wouldn't go back. If you've found a way to housebreak your puppy that works for you then stick with it. Consistency is the key to housebreaking a pet regardless of the method you use.

I think having a puppy in a safe area (baby proof) will be the best management plan for potty training and also a pup wouldn't be able to practice any undesired behaviors. Therefore management is always advised until we teach. Therefore baby gates , crates and play pens would be some management ideas. Keeping an open crate in a safe gated off room or area (playpen) is another great idea for crate training. The puppy decides when to go in and out.

I do agree that no professional should ever push ideologies on anyone! They should advise and give pros and cons of all tools and let the owners/parents decide. In my experience many discussions tip over into ethics quickly. I personally leave ethics out of educating and just teach the science and if isn't any latest studies I will state it :)

When a dog or puppy is crate trained properly the crate becomes a safe place for them it will not instill fear or ruin an owners relationship with thier dog.

Hope this helps and makes sense...I will check if we have any articles on potty training or crate training. DR is always updating and coming out with new articles and training plans. Hopefully they can add some video in the near future.

TY everyone for sharing your experience and knowledge.
