Natural Flea Preventives?

I've always gotten my dog's flea preventive from our vet. However, I've seen a lot of talk about natural flea preventives lately, and I wonder how effective they are.

One natural repellent I see mentioned often is apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is supposed to be a good preventive because it creates an unpleasant environment for fleas.

Another popular natural flea repellent seems to be diluted essential oils, such as lemon, lavender, citronella, and geranium.

Have you used any natural flea repellents on your dog? If so, how effective were they?

I am also fond of getting a flea preventative from my vet, though I have heard of multiple natural remedies that are readily available in the market. Have you heard that a mixture of unflavored vodka, thyme essential oil, garlic oil and rosemary essential oil actually gets rid of them?

@Ford23, I haven't heard that, but it sounds interesting. I wonder how effective the treatment is? Do you know anyone who has tried it out? Maybe I'll ask our vet about it and see what she has to say.

I think if I had to choose between the apple cider vinegar and the oils, the oils would be better on a dog's skin. Apple cider vinegar works on a multitude of ailments, human, vegetable and animal, but I wouldn't want to use it on a dog because if the dog is scratching itself the least little bit that vinegar is probably going to burn its skin. Also, if the vinegar is used anywhere near the eyes or the ears it could be irritating to a dog, in my opinion.
