Overweight

Are your dogs on the heavy side? My adult dogs are, but the puppy is not. The vet's gotten on to me about helping them to slim down. Any ideas other than going for more walks? It's so hot outside that my dogs aren't interested in walking much.

Just like human beings, dogs that are overweight are more susceptible to illnesses. For me, a specialized weight loss diet would be a measure of last resort. Have you, by any chance, been giving your dog unhealthy treats that are high in calories? Keenly studying its diet would be a good place to start.

Has your vet given you any suggestions on how to adjust your dogs' diets? If you are, "free-feeding," I would stop that and go to feeding your dogs at scheduled times. Measure each dog's portion of food, and feed them in separate rooms if you need to so they don't steal each other's food. I know scheduled feeding can be difficult to get on, but it should help a lot because each dog will be eating the calories he or she needs instead of extra calories from stealing food from the other dogs in the home or just eating when they feel like it through free-feeding.
