Table Scraps

Do you believe in giving your pooch table scraps? I do very rarely. Even then, I will wait till the meal is over and put the scraps in their respective dishes. I just can't stand to go to someone's home and have the dog beg during the entire meal.

I hate that, too! My dogs will sit by us at the table or lie under the table when we're eating, but they don't beg. Sometimes we have company who finds their close presence during mealtimes annoying, but that's just too bad. The dogs are part of the family and they want to be close to us.

As for table food, they get a special dinner on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, but that's about it. They crack me up because they have special holiday plates and when they see them come out, they know what's about to happen and get so excited.

We feed our dog a slice of bologna or a hot dog on occasion but she doesn't beg while we eat or anything like that. I do put her up when we have guests that are afraid of dogs or just don't like them. I'm pretty accommodating to guests who are just there for a few hours.

I think it's okay to give a dog human food. I would mix it in with their dog food, just to give their regular food variety in taste. It's a good way to use up left-overs. As far as just giving them table scraps on their own without any dog food mixed in, I don't really like the idea of that because I think that can cause dogs to get too used to human food and not want their dog food as much. Human food has salt, butter, garlic and oils, and herbs and spices. A dog could get too used to that.
Even if it's only done every now and then (scraps given on their own) I think the dog would come to expect to be given a little taste of something every time they smell food cooking. I wouldn't want that to happen.

We are guilty of cooking things like boiled chicken, chop turkey/meat, potatoes, yams all boiled and no spices. We mix it in with kibble everyday. We also use high value food like turkey for reinforcing or instilling new behaviors.

As for begging at the table we teach all dogs to either sit and ask for things or lay down in their beds while we eat. We have had great success with this because we all know dogs are opportunist and do what works :)

I don't mind if a dog sits near me on the floor while I'm eating at someone's house, but I don't like it if the dog puts her paws up on me or tries to get into my lap or on the table while I'm eating.

My dog sits near me when I eat, but she doesn't beg. We don't get a lot of dinner guests, but if we have some who don't want our dog near them while eating, I will put her in another room for that portion of the visit.

I do occasionally give my dog a few bites of chicken or turkey meat (without bones, of course). I put it in her bowl for her to enjoy after we're done eating. She always loves this occasional treat!

My family also eats together with our pet. He knows the schedule of meal times and he doesn't beg because he knows he will get food. We treat him like we treat our son and it is a surprise that our dog responds similarly like our little boy.

Why do you say you are guilty of cooking things like boiled chicken, turkey (yams!!) etc. for your dogs? Why should you feel guilty? That's great!!
I bet your dogs are super healthy. After all, food and water are life. Besides, don't all those dog food commercials brag about how they are made with mostly real ingredients like chicken, turkey, vegetables? I think it's great you feed your dogs so well. Chicken, turkey, yams, potatoes... (y)(y)(y)(y).
