Vaccination, Which Ones Are A Must And Those That Are Optional?

I have heard many complications to vaccination shots given to humans. I wonder if these things also happen to our dogs when they are vaccinated with something that they don't actually need. So what are the vaccines that our dogs "need" to have and what are the vaccines that they can live without?

Definitely one of the debated topics among professionals and dog owners. Many suggest that we are over vaccinating our dogs and they don't need many of the shots that we give them.

I believe the core vaccinations will be:
  • Canine distemper
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Canine adenovirus 1 infection
  • Rabies

Non Core:
  • Leptospirosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Canine cough complex
  • Canine influenza

I am going to suggest we get a nice article on this topic and post it asap in this thread...

I had no idea that you could vaccinate against Lyme disease. I need to look into that because Revolution doesn't work on some ticks. Is Canine Cough Complex the same thing as kennel cough?

I would always advise to consult with your vet on anything medical. It’s not my speciality and wouldn’t want to give the wrong info :)

It is definitely a hot topic when talking vaccinations.

It is indeed a hot topic and even professionals are not united in one understanding. One vaccine I'm concerned about is the Rabies vaccine. I'm asking this in line with the Shingles vaccine for humans.

Is there a possibility that the Rabies vaccine might actually induce my dog to get sick?
