Event markers are definitely in my opinion a great tool for communication. Letting a dog know what they did in that moment earned them the reinforcer is a great tool.

Here’s is a great article on clicker/event marker

I'm not sure how I feel about the clicker, although I'm all for dogs being rewarded in a consistent manner when they have done a certain thing right. The clicker seems like it is a little bit too restrictive, like you have to have one on hand at all times. Maybe this isn't the case, but that's kind of how it feels. And when does clicker use stop? I'm going to have to study this subject more.

Great questions! Many use a word instead for an event maker like “Yes” or “click” because they don’t or forget the clicker at home. I can’t ever see myself teaching without using an event marker.

I use an event marker when I am instilling new behaviors and then use praise such as “good dog” when I feel the behavior is proofed in all environmental context.

There was an interesting talk about when or how long to use a clicker between to very well known professionals in the field. Let me try and dig up the articles/video with Karon Pryor and Simon Gadbois that they had during a yearly event called SPARCS.

It was very interesting and I find using it to instill new behaviors returns awesome learning results.
