Many humans get a submissive smile confused with an agonistic pucker (a warning sign) to give a dog more space. Agonistic pucker is related to aggression. Another words a distance increasing behavior.
A submissive smile is a dog’s way of saying, “I just met you, but I humbly respect you.” They use the submissive smile to communicate to other dogs and humans alike that they are not interested in fighting, they want to be friendly.
Here is a video of one of our campers and I wanted to post it because we don’t get to see many dogs offer a submissive smile. Also because it’s usually a misread body language (a dogs way to communicate)
