    Do you have dog insurance?

Definitely an interesting topic and for me personally I never had insurance on my dogs. My limited research and from what I heard from clients is that everything can never be covered or fully covered. I’ll send a message to DR team and see if we can get a research article on this topic...

    Getting a New Dog

Great question and here are some tips: Decide on a breed like you mentioned and do a bit of research for things like shedding and activity levels. Most will suggest picking a breed that fits into your families lifestyle. What I always suggest is adopting a dog and not rushing into it. I find...

    Hot spots

From my experience I think it has something to do with moisture, heat, toss in some allergies to the new flowers and grass growing. I am no vet but I do exactly what you do when redirecting isn't working anymore. I place the cone/air doughnut on and let it heal quickly. My dog is desensitized to...

    Canine Body Language

Great topic and for now I'll point you to the body language section to get a head start on more info. Also for an FYI, most look to Turid Rugaas when it comes to body language. DR has a very good section and covers lots of body language along with lots of trainers lingo. Learning some basic...

    Book recommendations?

Here are a few that are regularly recommended that will set anyone on the right path on how dogs think and learn. I’ll send out a request to our writers to get a nice list and article for this topic. * Karen Pryor- Don’t Shoot The Dog * Jean Donaldson- The Culture Clash * Pamela Reid- Excel-...

    Pet peeves

From a behavior point of view we will always suggest desensitizing at an early age and definitely during a puppies critical/imprint stage. We find that desensitizing and or counter conditioning to anything scary or novel such as handling, new locations and the tools groomers use. We suggest...

    Table Scraps

We are guilty of cooking things like boiled chicken, chop turkey/meat, potatoes, yams all boiled and no spices. We mix it in with kibble everyday. We also use high value food like turkey for reinforcing or instilling new behaviors. As for begging at the table we teach all dogs to either sit...

    Special Needs Dog

Takes special people like you to step up and adopt. I find that blind dogs and even deaf ones can adapt and live healthy lives. Many things we humans can to do to help them navigate through the environment. If your not already doing things like using touch and smells to help. Examples...

    Owners interfering with handling

I agree ethics will always play such a huge part on how we handle and teach animals.

    Owners interfering with handling

There's actually a whole debate on this within the industry when handling dogs during vet visits, grooming or any profession where a dog needs to be handled by a human/s (unfamiliar or familiar). There is so much we can do as humans to help dogs in situations like these to help them not feel...

Did you know that we sometimes do things dogs don’t like ?

The list can get pretty long fast! We humans need lots of work :)

Do Extending Leads Give Dogs the Wrong Message?

I see one of DR’s writers did a quick article on the topic: Should we walk our dogs with a retractable leash? If anyone wants to take a peak...TY

Small dogs that don't bark loudly?

I am not sure on the going rates of Dogs/puppies but I would assume lowest pricing will be a rescue from a shelter or group. Which leads me to my next topic socializing. I would say that most dogs will bark in homes out of fear and anxiety. Therefore socializing a puppy well will definitely...

Are dogs self-aware? Do they have a self-conscious?

Great topic and honestly when I observe a dog seeing themselves in a mirror most of them seem to know it’s them. Younger ones or fearful dogs sometimes react and seem startled for sure. We have a good article on this topic: “The argument for or against consciousness in dogs is important for...

    Matted Fur

Here goes one of my experiences with a matted dog Rags to Riches. This was one of the worst I seen personally. I also agree that an overall enrichment plan for all animals is a must.

Training a small dog to use a litter box

I would say teaching a dog to go in a box is definitely possible. It would be the same concept of going on a wee wee pad or a designated area. Many ways to go about this and implementing it into your basic potty training would help it along.

    Processed Dog Food

When I did research on foods years ago I found a site or two that use to be the go to but not sure on the value now. I am pretty sure it has good content. Here is one: Dog Food Advisor There was another one that broke down each and every ingredient and explained what it is but can't track it...

Since a dog can't tell time...

I am a believer that dogs love routine and pick up routines quickly. I get what your saying, for example if you take your dog in the car or leave him at home and your running into or to the store correct? Which usually takes you the same amount of time. Therefore you play the same song or string...

    Hot Pavement and Sand

It’s still surprising how many don’t realize paws get super hot from different surfaces. I read once if you place your palm on the ground and you can’t keep it there for a few seconds it’s the same for dogs paws. I might get a dirty hand but it’s my go to test :)
