Hot Pavement and Sand

I live on the coast and am always aware of hot pavement and sand when the girls and I go for a walk. I know their pads are tough but as hot as it gets here, there is always the possibility they could burn their feet. I guess I'm just being over protective but I love my girls.
 
They absolutely can burn their pads so good for you on being proactive!! They make booties to protect the feet such as roughwear brand. The mushing booties sled dogs use are for abrasion from running and not hot pavement. Interesting to note...when I lived in North Carolina on the beach dogs (small ones in particular) would overheat because they are closer to the ground and the radiant heat from the sand/pavement would keep it warmer for them rather than cooler. When we lived in Texas even at 9pm it was hot. The pavement was cool enough to walk on but you could feel the heat coming from it. My poor sled dogs thought it was a cruel joke moving to TX. We didn’t last long there and ended up in the mountains here in Colorado.
 
Good to know Kirsten. We try to plan our walks early in the morning and at sundown. They go out during the day to potty in the backyard which has grass so they don't get too hot there. I used to live in Colorado. Beautiful country, very cold and lots of snow. Your sled dogs should be right at home.
 
It’s still surprising how many don’t realize paws get super hot from different surfaces. I read once if you place your palm on the ground and you can’t keep it there for a few seconds it’s the same for dogs paws.

I might get a dirty hand but it’s my go to test :)
