Dealing with Pet Loss

The toughest part about having a pet has to be dealing with loss. Do you have any traditions or methods for easing the pain? If I know my pet is sick, I'll try to give them a week or so of the best time ever. That means their favorite treats in unlimited amounts, taking them on endless car rides, whatever they most enjoy. One of my dogs had cancer and on the way to the vet, I took him for one last walk. It was glorious! Beau pranced and sniffed and got lots of compliments from the early morning walkers. I did my best not to cry. After his walk we drove straight to the vet for his euthanasia. I remember holding him and talking about our wonderful walk together - what a good time we had, how Beau was so smart that he sniffed out a mole, how the other people thought he looked majestic, and I thanked him for going with me. His eyes sparkled with happiness and love before he took his last breath.

One kind lady took our picture at the park that morning. I treasure it today. It's obvious that Beau was sick. He's thin and weary, but his eyes told the story - he was thrilled to be on a walk at his favorite park with his number one person. Stopping for that impromptu walk was the best decision I've ever made.

This is so sad:cry:. The toughest part about owning a pet is dealing with the loss that you know is going to come some day, or as you said, dealing with the loss that comes when a pet gets sick. I'm glad you got to be with your dog and have a very nice day prior to taking him to the vet, and thank goodness you have a nice picture to go with the beautiful part of that day. I feel like there is no easy way to deal with the pain. Some of the animals I've lost over the years, I still get weepy about. I don't have any traditions or methods for easing the pain.
