How To Hold Puppies Properly?

When I was young, I try to imitate how the mother dog holds her puppies. Is that okay to do with puppies?

There are some puppies that don't want to be carried and they wiggle in order to get free. Holding them above the neck makes them calmer, just my observation.
 
True, there are puppies that seem to value their freedom and holding makes them feel restricted. The much I know about puppies is when you are picking them up, you should place your hand above its chest while supporting the back.
 
I heard that picking up the puppies often will hinder their growth. I know this is just a myth, but anyone else ever heard of this? I love picking up puppies because they are so cute.
