What Do You Look for in a Groomer?

I don't want my dogs to be put in a cage to dry. They can quickly overheat and that's supposedly why some dogs died at Petco and Petsmart while getting groomed. So, I ask the groomer to blow dry them with a hair dryer on the grooming table or floor. I'm happy to pay extra for that service...

Vaccination, Which Ones Are A Must And Those That Are Optional?

I had no idea that you could vaccinate against Lyme disease. I need to look into that because Revolution doesn't work on some ticks. Is Canine Cough Complex the same thing as kennel cough?

Caution: make sure to update microchip info

My neighbor just called to let me know he returned! I guess the severe storms we've been experiencing kept him from venturing back home. I'm betting another citizen did what I do during tornado warnings and that's stick the wandering dog in the garage or basement until the threat passes. She...

How often do you bathe your dog?

I have three dogs and can't imagine bathing them that often. It takes over an hour to bathe and blow dry each one. Am I too slow? They get dandruff if I bathe them once a week, so I usually shoot for every other week. I brush their teeth and clean their ears more often though.

Caution: make sure to update microchip info

My neighbor's Bloodhound dug out of their fence and they can't find him. He's been microchipped, but the information is out-of-date as they've just recently moved here and gotten new cell phone numbers too. It's just so frustrating to think of the microchip leading to a dead-end. Make sure...

    Money Saving Tips

Check discount stores for bargains on high-quality food. I often find reputable brands like Nature's Variety, Taste of the Wild, Orijen, and Lotus at stores like United Grocery Outlet (UGO) and Big Lots. Just make sure to check the expiration dates before buying. After Christmas Big Lots puts...

    Cleaning up "accidents"

Did you know that using a steam cleaner as a way to remove urine stains and disinfect the area actually makes things worse? The steam causes the stain and odor to set in more deeply. I had no idea and that's exactly how I've been cleaning up accidents. After reading the informative article...

    Overweight

Are your dogs on the heavy side? My adult dogs are, but the puppy is not. The vet's gotten on to me about helping them to slim down. Any ideas other than going for more walks? It's so hot outside that my dogs aren't interested in walking much.

    Healthy Dog Food?

I try to go the grain-free route and buy Wellness Core dry dog food and a mix of Wellness, Natural Balance, and Nature's Variety wet food. I don't really think it's making a difference though. They seem no better off than when I fed them Purina. I think it's important to choose a variety with...

    Persistent ear infections

Hairy, floppy ears are adorable, but they leave those breeds more prone to ear infections. A lot of it is due to excess moisture, which enables yeast and bacteria to thrive. I have a cocker spaniel and the vet gave me doggie ear cleaner and said it's okay to use cotton swabs and cotton balls...

    Indoor Activities for Your Dog

@DenverDogLover82 believe it or not there are tons of videos on YouTube that were created with dogs in mind. Some of the videos are meant to stimulate and entertain and some are meant for relaxation. I have three dogs and two of them are enthralled when I let them watch. Just look on YouTube...

    Fostering dogs

It might help to foster dogs that have a home waiting on them. Sometimes people adopt dogs when they aren't able to take them right away like puppies that are still too young, a dog who hasn't finished his medicine, or owners who are moving soon. In those instances, it still frees up room at...

    Indoor Activities for Your Dog

Ice hockey is a favorite around here if you don't mind getting your kitchen floor wet. I just freeze different shapes of ice, dump them out on the floor, and let the dogs and the kids go wild. The dogs will bat at that stuff for ages. It works great on tile, but probably wouldn't be wise on...

    I hate crate training!

When I got my adult dogs, crate training wasn't a thing. Now that I have a puppy, both the vet tech and the groomers insist that crate training is the only way to go. It's not something I'm comfortable doing. Is crate training really the best method for housebreaking a puppy?

Do you think pit bulls get a bad rap? Should the owners be held responsible?

Well, if a person or another dog gets badly hurt, you need to assign blame so the medical bills get paid. I'd say it depends on the situation, but generally speaking, owners should be held accountable for their dogs whether it hurts a person or it destroys property. The owner is in a position...

Are cameras necessary at a boarding facility?

No one is going to take care of my pets as well as me. If a facility had cameras I'd watch them all day long and nitpick at every perceived infraction even if it made total sense. I can see it now, "Oh, you put my puppy in time-out for playing rough? He barely nipped at that bulldog. Well...

    Fostering dogs

I've found fostering dogs to be a wonderful experience and it's a great way to help out shelters and rescue groups. Foster homes can teach dogs how to live with a family and can give the pup a much-needed break from shelter life. Some dogs that appear terribly timid or uninterested while at...

    Money Saving Tips

I thought we could help each other out by sharing ways we've found to save money on pet supplies, food, treats, and toys. I buy a lot of dog food on Chewy.com because it's usually the best price. It's worth it to subscribe to the emailing lists of Petco.com and Petflow.com because they...

How do you talk to your dog?

I use the puppy voice on all of my dogs, both young and old. I do it with the cats as well. I guess I still think of them all as my babies.

Help - puppy is chewing up the house

I was hesitant to use Bitter Apple, just out of fear that it might make Pip sick, but it didn't make him ill and it absolutely worked. I only sprayed it on the truly dangerous stuff like the electrical cords and the strings on the blinds. I tucked the strings up so they wouldn't tempt him, but...
